Pescasseroli

Pescasseroli is a mountain commune at 1167 meters (3829 feet) elevation at the entrance of a valley along the Sangro River in the Province of L'Aquila, Italy. Old forests and mountain pastures surround the settlement, which serves as the main center for Abruzzo National Park.

An 11th-century monastery formed the core of the settlement under the rule of the Borrello family. The town later passed to the Di Sangro family before becoming part of the holdings of Aquila.

The birthplace of philosopher Benedetto Croce still displays his family home, now arranged as a museum. Residents gather at the main square in front of cafes while hikers prepare their gear for park excursions.

The visitor center and nature museum lie close to the town center and provide information about wildlife and hiking trails in the park. Ski slopes on Monte Vitelle can be reached in a short drive from the village.

A sheep route of 211 kilometers (131 miles) connects the mountains with the pastures of Puglia and follows an old Roman military road. Shepherds used this path for centuries to move their flocks seasonally between the elevations.
