Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Mondovi, Minor basilica in Vicoforte, Italy.
The Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Mondovi is a Catholic place of worship in Vicoforte, Italy, known for its elliptical dome that ranks among the largest in the world. The entire interior is clad in marble and shows a lavish decoration that spreads across several levels and draws the eye toward the dome vault.
Duke Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy commissioned architect Ascanio Vittozzi in 1596 to build the place of worship, which was meant to serve as a future mausoleum for the dynasty. The works lasted over two centuries, and the church eventually became a major burial site for several members of the House of Savoy.
The name honors a Marian image that, according to tradition, was accidentally damaged by a hunter in 1592 and then restored. Visitors today see a richly decorated interior where the frescoes depict scenes from the life of Mary and the saints, while pilgrims gather before the image of grace.
Access is through a wide staircase leading to the main facade, and the interior is well lit so the ceiling paintings become visible. Visitors should plan time for a walk around to see the different chapels and the crypt located beneath the main hall.
The dome was built at a time when elliptical shapes in church construction were still rare, and engineers developed new techniques back then to secure the stability of the unusual vault. In 2017, the remains of Elena of Montenegro, the second Queen of Italy, were transferred here from Montpellier and laid to rest in the crypt.
