Mondovì Funicular, Funicular railway in Mondovì, Italy
The Mondovì Funicular is a cable-driven railway in Piedmont that connects the lower Breo district with the higher Piazza district above it. The line ascends between the two neighborhoods, providing a direct link for residents and visitors moving up the steep slope.
The line started service in 1886 using a water counterbalance system to operate. It switched to electrical power in 1926 and received a complete rebuilding in 2006.
The funicular links two distinct neighborhoods of Mondovì, tying the lower commercial zone to the historical upper quarter with baroque architecture. Locals and visitors use it daily to move between areas with very different character and atmosphere.
The journey is brief and straightforward, making it accessible for visitors with limited time or mobility concerns. Service runs frequently throughout the day, so off-peak times offer a more comfortable ride without crowds.
Despite its steep incline, the funicular became known for safe and comfortable operation across many decades. The 2006 renovation applied modern engineering while preserving the original concept that made it work.
