Mondovì, Medieval commune in Province of Cuneo, Italy.
Mondovì is a town in the Province of Cuneo with several districts spread across different elevation levels, including the neighborhoods of Piazza, Breo, and Pian della Valle. The center sits around 395 meters above sea level and is connected to the higher areas by the Funicolare di Mondovì funicular railway.
The town was founded in 1198 when survivors from the village of Bredolo settled in the area and established a new community. By the 16th century, it had become one of Piedmont's largest cities.
The town's churches, particularly the Cathedral of San Donato and the Church of San Francesco Saverio, show how different periods left their mark on its architectural appearance. Walking through these buildings reveals the artistic styles that shaped the community across different eras.
The best way to explore the town's different elevation levels is to use the funicular railway between the districts. Wear sturdy shoes as there are many stairs and uneven paths connecting the higher and lower neighborhoods.
The town was an important center for early printing: in 1472, the first printing press in Piedmont was set up here. It also hosted the region's first university from 1560 to 1566.
