Avez del Prinzipe, national heritage tree in Lavarone, Italy

Avez del Prinzipe was a white fir in Malga Laghetto, in the municipality of Lavarone (TN), on the Trentino Prealps. It reached 54 metres in height with a circumference of 5.6 metres, and was listed by the Corpo Forestale dello Stato as a monumental tree of Italy. In the storm of 12–13 November 2017 it broke and fell almost entirely onto the platform built around it: only a 4-metre stump remained at the base, while the other 50 metres crashed to the ground.

The name Avéz del Prìnzep comes from a popular legend: the great tree once belonged to the head of the commune of Luserna, nicknamed Prìnzipe. Avéz is the local term for the white fir. Visitors to Malga Laghetto can still see the 4-metre stump left at the base after the 2017 storm.
