Werk Verle, Military fortress in Levico Terme, Italy
Werk Verle is a military fortress located at about 1506 meters (4940 feet) elevation in the mountains near Levico Terme, constructed from four sections extending approximately 70 meters (230 feet). The structure contains multiple rooms and artillery positions, built from concrete and designed to blend into the mountainous terrain.
The fortress was built between 1907 and 1914 by Austro-Hungarian forces as a defensive position during World War I. The structure lost its military importance after the war as fighting shifted to other regions.
The fort takes its name from its mountain location and draws hikers interested in World War I history to explore its remains. Visitors can observe the compact layout and functional design that shaped soldiers' daily routines in this remote stronghold.
The fortress lies between two mountain huts and offers hikers several routes through the surrounding hills. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as access can be steep and the terrain is rough.
The structure includes four rotating cupolas that allowed soldiers to aim cannons in different directions. An underground tunnel system connected all sections, enabling troops to move between positions under cover.
