Fortress Campo Luserna

Fortress Campo Luserna is a military structure located at 1549 meters elevation, featuring a trapezoidal design with a surrounding moat and multiple defensive positions across different levels. The fortress demonstrates strategic mountain fortification architecture with layered defenses.

The fortress was built between 1908 and 1912 as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's defense network against potential Italian advances. In summer 1915, it endured intense combat that caused substantial damage from artillery fire.

Metal installations throughout the fortress display accounts from local residents during World War I. These artworks help visitors connect with the personal experiences of people who lived through that era.

Access to the fortress is through a two-hour walk starting from Piazza Battisti, following marked trails across mountain terrain. The route is demanding and requires proper hiking gear and favorable weather conditions.

The fortress withstood over one thousand artillery projectiles during four days of intense bombardment in summer 1915. This resilience makes it a remarkable example of defensive architecture tested under extreme conditions.
