Basilica dei Fieschi

The Basilica dei Fieschi is a Gothic church with a facade of alternating white marble and slate, featuring a large marble rose window and a pointed bell tower. Inside, three naves are supported by stone columns with decorated capitals.

The basilica was completed in 1252 by Ottobono Fieschi, nephew of Pope Innocent IV, and later recognized as a national monument of Italy. This religious structure marks an important chapter in the region's medieval history.

The church displays a fresco by Giovanni Barbagelata showing Christ on the cross with Mary, Saint John, and two prominent members of the Fieschi family. This artwork reflects the deep connection between the family and the religious life of Cogorno.

The building sits on Piazza della Basilica in Cogorno and opens daily for visitors, with regular religious services throughout the year. Visiting during quieter times helps you explore the interior and architectural details at a comfortable pace.

The bell tower holds six diatonic bells cast in 1905 that still ring today. These historic bronze bells together produce a harmonious sound that carries far across the valley.
