Church of Santissima Annunziata, Monastery church in Borgo Stazione, Italy
The Church of Santissima Annunziata is a monastery church standing at the center of Montecosaro, in the Marche region, with a marble facade in the Renaissance style and a spacious nave inside. The building carries layers of construction from different periods, visible in the stonework, chapels, and carved decorative elements throughout.
The church has its roots in the early medieval period and was rebuilt and extended several times, most notably during the Renaissance when the marble facade was added. The monastic community that grew around it shaped not only the building but also the layout of the surrounding part of Montecosaro.
Inside the church, votive offerings left by local worshippers over many generations line the walls alongside painted panels and carved details. This accumulation of personal devotion gives the interior a layered quality that feels very different from a purely ceremonial space.
The entrance opens directly onto the main square of Montecosaro, making it easy to find on foot from any part of the old center. Visiting outside of service hours gives more time to look at the interior details without interruption.
Although the church is listed as Italian national heritage, it remains an active place of worship, which is less common for a building of this status. Along the side walls of some chapels, fragments of original medieval painted plaster survive beneath later layers and are still visible to anyone who looks closely.
