Santa Maria di Nazareth Basilica

Santa Maria di Nazareth is a minor basilica with neoclassical styling located in central Sestri Levante. Inside, three naves separated by square pillars and fluted pilasters support curved arches that lead toward a raised altar area ending in a semicircular apse.

Construction began in 1604 when nobleman Bernardo Bolasco donated the land and architect Giovanni Battista Carbone took charge of the project. The work was finished around twelve years later, creating a lasting landmark for the area.

The name honors Mary of Nazareth and reflects the town's long tradition of Marian devotion that continues today. Worshippers and visitors find a space where prayer and community celebration remain central to daily life in this neighborhood.

The basilica sits on Piazza Giacomo Matteotti in the town center and operates as an active parish church for the Diocese of Chiavari. Visitors should know that regular worship services take place here, so respectful behavior is important when entering.

Inside the basilica rests a wooden crucifix dating to the 12th century that came from an earlier parish church and received papal recognition through a coronation ceremony in 1903. This rare object links the religious history of different communities together in one space.
