Casa Scaccabarozzi, Neoclassical residential building in Vanchiglia district, Turin, Italy.
Casa Scaccabarozzi is a neoclassical residential building located at the intersection of Corso San Maurizio and Via Giulia di Barolo in Turin's Vanchiglia neighborhood. Its thin, tapered shape creates a distinctive wedge-like form that sets it apart from typical residential architecture.
Architect Alessandro Antonelli designed and constructed the building between 1840 and 1881 as a commission in the Vanchiglia area. He named it after his wife Francesca Scaccabarozzi, having acquired the land as compensation for his professional services.
Locals call this building 'Fetta di Polenta' (Polenta Slice) because of its yellow color and thin, wedge-shaped form. The nickname reflects how people in the neighborhood relate to the structure's distinctive appearance.
Access to the building is through entrances located at the street corner, though the interior has limited space due to its narrow staircase design. A rope-and-pulley system on the roof allows residents to move large furniture and objects through the windows.
The building survived two major catastrophes—the 1852 powder magazine explosion in Borgo Dora and an 1887 earthquake—without significant damage. This resilience is striking given its unusual construction and narrow profile.
