Campitello Matese, Mountain resort in San Massimo, Italy

Campitello Matese is a mountain station within the Matese range at approximately 1,450 meters (4,757 feet) elevation, featuring about 40 kilometers (25 miles) of slopes and trails. The complex has two chairlifts and seven sports facilities that provide access to terrain for different skill levels.

The place began as a simple shepherd shelter in the 1960s and grew into a modern ski resort during the 1970s. This transformation represented a major shift in how the local community earned its living.

The place has deep ties to professional cycling, regularly hosting riders from the Giro d'Italia who test their strength on steep mountain stages. The community draws pride and identity from this connection to Italy's famous cycling race and the prestige of being a race destination.

The best time for winter sports visitors is from December through March when slopes are groomed and snow conditions are good. The terrain is easy to navigate since lifts and pathways are clearly marked for all visitors.

The climb from San Massimo is a feared cycling stage with steep pitches that regularly push professionals to their limits. This demanding route has become a defining test in the cycling world and attracts fans eager to witness athletes struggle against the mountain.
