Castello di Monasterolo

Castello di Monasterolo is a medieval castle set on a hilltop overlooking Lake Endine, with thick stone walls and Gothic architectural details. Inside, a small oratory dedicated to Saint Anne provides insight into the spiritual life of those who lived there.

Founded between 1000 and 1200 on the site of an earlier Benedictine monastery, the fortress was built as part of a regional defense network. It served alongside neighboring strongholds to protect the area from invasion and maintain control over surrounding lands.

The castle reflects its transformation from military stronghold to private residence, visible in how the rooms and spaces are arranged throughout the building. Visitors walking through can sense how different generations adapted the fortress to suit the needs of noble families.

The site is best explored on foot, with paths leading up the hillside to the castle entrance and views extending across the lake and countryside. Comfortable footwear is advisable since the climb is steep and walkways can be uneven.

An English Countess named Winifred Terni de Gregorj Taylor undertook restoration work in the 1930s and 1940s, also creating an extensive garden on the grounds. This garden, planted with hundreds of trees, remains accessible to visitors and adds to the overall experience of the site.
