Castello di Montalto Dora

The Castello di Montalto Dora is a fortified structure set on a hilltop with strong walls and a substantial central tower at its core. The compound includes several buildings arranged within defensive fortifications, along with a chapel containing historical artwork.

The fortress was first mentioned in 1140 as Castrum Monsalti and was initially controlled by the Bishop of Ivrea. In the 14th century, it passed to the House of Savoy, which shifted its political role in the region.

The chapel inside displays 15th-century frescoes that reflect local religious traditions of the time. These paintings remain visible today and offer insight into the spiritual life of those who lived here.

Access involves a steep climb up the hillside, so sturdy footwear and some physical effort are necessary. It is best to visit on clear days to enjoy the views from above and see the surrounding landscape clearly.

In the early 1900s, engineers undertook extensive renovations while carefully preserving medieval construction techniques. This thoughtful restoration work allowed the castle to maintain its historic appearance while being adapted for contemporary use at that time.
