Castello di Montepò

Castello di Montepò is a medieval fortress in Scansano built with rectangular layout and four corner towers surrounding a central courtyard with brick-covered walls. The defensive architecture sits on elevated ground overlooking the surrounding vineyards and countryside.

The fortress originated around 1100 near an ancient parish church and underwent substantial reconstruction in the 14th century under the lords of Cotone. This medieval reworking established the defensive form that remains visible today.

The fortress stands as a landmark tied to the region's medieval past and continues to shape how people view the surrounding landscape. Its solid stone walls remain a reference point in local identity and memory.
