Albegno Castle

Albegno Castle, Medieval castle in Treviolo, Italy.

Albegno Castle is a medieval fortification in Treviolo featuring a stone tower, an entrance with drawbridge traces, and walls patterned with herringbone-laid cobblestones. The structure includes brick reinforcements at key points and remains in the ownership of the Suardi family.

The castle suffered heavy damage during a conflict between the Suardi and Colleoni families in 1405. Venetian rule beginning in 1428 brought stability to the region and altered the site's role.

The castle reflects building practices of its era through stone masonry and reinforced structures typical of medieval fortifications. Visitors can observe these methods in the standing walls and tower.

The site is accessible but privately owned, so it is best to check ahead for visiting options before planning a trip. Daytime visits work best for seeing the ruins and their architectural details clearly.

The walls display a rare herringbone pattern in their cobblestone construction, emphasizing the craftsmanship involved. This detailed technique is not commonly found in other medieval fortifications of the area.
