Breno Castle

Breno Castle is a medieval stone fortress sitting on a hilltop above the town of Breno in Lombardy. The structure features crenellated walls and two defensive towers that rise above the surrounding valley.

The castle site shows human settlement from Neolithic times onward, as revealed by archaeological finds. A medieval fortress was later built here to control the valley for centuries.

The ruins of Saint Michele church within the castle walls show building styles from Longobard and Romanesque times. This blend of different periods is still visible in the stonework and the way the rooms are laid out.

The walk uphill from the center of Breno to the castle takes about 15 minutes along marked paths. The routes are clearly signposted, making it easy to find your way up to the gates.

Excavations at the site uncovered ancient tools, pottery, and two old burial sites. These discoveries show how people lived in this valley across thousands of years.
