Buccione Castle

Buccione Castle is a medieval fortification perched high above Lake Orta on a hillside, built with stone walls and a central tower that dominates the landscape. The structure spreads across the hilltop with defensive works that protect the entire position.

The castle first appears in documents from the 13th century as part of a defensive network for the region. It became a center of conflict as local powers fought for control over the area.

The fortress displays features typical of northern Italian military design with its fortified form and commanding position above the water. It represents how this region saw itself as a defended community that needed protection against threats.

Access to the castle comes through pathways on the hillside with parking available near the village. It makes sense to wear sturdy shoes as the climb is steep and the paths are uneven.

A warning bell from the 17th century was originally installed on the castle tower to alert nearby settlements of danger. The bell can be seen today in the garden of Orta's town hall.
