Castle of Burio

Castle of Burio is a stone fortress perched on a hill where the Tinella and Nizza streams converge. It sits surrounded by vineyards and agricultural fields that stretch across the Lower Piedmont landscape.

The fortress was controlled by several noble families including Pelletta, Asinari, Schiara, Malabaila, Roero, and Cacherano d'Osasco before the Lanzavecchia counts acquired it in 1916. This long succession of rulers shaped how the structure evolved over time.

The castle displays the architectural style of the Asti-Monferrato region through its two towers and drawbridge design. Visitors can observe these defensive features and understand how the structure reflected the building traditions of medieval Piedmont.

In 1617, residents successfully expelled a Tyrolean military company after a two-day siege. This event occurred during the Franco-Spanish conflicts that threatened the region.
