San Francesco, Neoclassical church in Oristano, Italy
San Francesco is a neoclassical church in Oristano featuring a central floor plan with two side chapels and a semicircular apse. The building is topped by a hemispherical dome resting on a cylindrical base and accessed via a wide staircase with three entrance portals.
An earlier structure on the site collapsed in 1838, leading architect Gaetano Cima to design a replacement. The new building opened for worship in 1847.
The church holds a marble sculpture of Saint Basil and a painting of Saint Francis receiving stigmata that reflect the community's devotion. These artworks remain visible reminders of the saints the building honors.
The church stands beside the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in the historic center, making it easy to locate. A wide staircase leads up to the three main entrance doors.
The adjoining monastery refectory witnessed the signing of the 1388 Peace Treaty between Eleonora and the Catalan-Aragonese king John I. This space links political events to the religious community that inhabited the complex.
