Torre di Mariano II, Medieval tower in Piazza Roma, Oristano, Italy
Torre di Mariano II is a medieval sandstone tower in central Oristano with a main shaft rising 19 meters topped by a crenellated turret. The central structure with the turret reaches a total height of 28 meters.
This structure was built in 1290 during the reign of Marianus II and served as the northern gate tower within the city walls. It was equipped with defensive fortifications to protect the medieval city's entrance.
The tower takes its alternate name Torre di San Cristoforo from a Spanish retablo depicting Saint Christopher, the protector of travelers. This naming reflects the medieval city's connection to spiritual guardians and devotional art.
The tower stands in central Oristano near Piazza Roma and is visible from outside at any time since it occupies a central location. Visitors can view the exterior and structure throughout the year.
A bronze bell from 1430 hangs in the upper chamber and once marked the passage of time for the city. This artifact remains in its original position and is one of the tower's most distinctive features from the early modern period.
