Church of Saints Nazarius and Celsus

Church of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, Romanesque church in Montechiaro d'Asti, Italy.

The Church of Saints Nazarius and Celsus is a Romanesque church in Montechiaro d'Asti with a prominent bell tower rising above the structure. The exterior walls display alternating bands of brick and sandstone that create a distinctive visual rhythm across the facade.

This structure was built around 1130 at the location of the former Mairano settlement. A complete rebuilding took place in 1847 using a systematic method of numbered materials to guide reassembly.

The structure reflects how local builders across the Monferrat region worked with materials like brick and stone to create lasting works. You can see this approach expressed in every wall and archway when you visit.

The church sits on a hilltop to the northeast of Montechiaro town center, making it visible from a distance. The elevated position offers good views of the surrounding countryside as you approach and enter the building.

During the 1847 reconstruction, every stone and brick was individually numbered before being returned to its original position in the wall. This careful cataloguing method ensured that the building could be reassembled while preserving its authentic original form.
