Castello di Poppiano, Medieval castle in Montespertoli, Italy.
Castello di Poppiano is a medieval fortress positioned on elevated terrain, featuring an L-shaped layout with triple boundary walls and a central tower. Extensive vineyards surround the structure, creating a distinct boundary between the castle grounds and the surrounding landscape.
The fortress was first recorded in written documents during 1199, when it already belonged to the Guicciardini family. Major repairs following an earthquake in the early 1800s introduced Gothic Revival architectural elements that remain visible today.
The castle remained a residence for the Guicciardini family across nine centuries, shaping how they lived and worked in this Tuscan landscape. You can sense their presence in how the rooms and spaces are arranged throughout the structure.
Entry to the castle is by way of a stone staircase on the southern side of the complex. Plan your visit for cooler parts of the day, as the elevated position offers limited shade and can become quite warm.
Following earthquake damage in the early 1800s, the castle was rebuilt with Gothic Revival architectural additions that create a visible blend of medieval and 19th-century styles. This combination of layers reveals how the structure was adapted and restored through different historical periods.
