Castello di Salle

Castello di Salle, Medieval castle in Salle, Italy.

Castello di Salle is a fortress built on a rocky hilltop and constructed with three towers and a crenellated roof. The structure has an L-shaped form and offers views over the valleys, while the northern side contains several entrances to the museum.

The fortress was founded before the 11th century as a possession of an abbey and originally served for defense and control of the area. In the 16th century it transformed into a noble residence when wealthy families made it their home.

The castle houses a medieval museum displaying weapons, paintings, and religious garments from different periods. Visitors walking through these rooms get a sense of how wealthy families lived in this region.

Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the climb to the fortress is steep and paths can be uneven. The museum is well marked, but it pays to move slowly to enjoy all the exhibition details and the views.

Below the castle lie the ruins of the old village of Salle, destroyed by a 1915 earthquake and still showing traces of the medieval settlement. These hidden remains give visitors a glimpse into life before the disaster.
