Riserva regionale Valle dell'Orta

Riserva regionale Valle dell'Orta is a nature reserve in the Province of Pescara that covers several hundred hectares of protected land. The Orta River has carved deep gorges, formed waterfalls, and created cave systems throughout this rugged terrain.

The reserve received official protection status in 1989 and was incorporated into Maiella National Park a few years later. These designations marked important steps in safeguarding this unique river valley.

The reserve contains caves like Callarelli and Scura that hold evidence of Neolithic settlements, connecting present-day visitors with ancient human presence in the area.

The best way to explore the valley is on foot using the walking paths that run through the reserve. Wear sturdy shoes since trails follow the riverbed and cross uneven ground.

The Santa Lucia rapids feature remarkable rock basins that formed over centuries as the river eroded the limestone terrain. These naturally sculpted pools are a geological feature that many visitors overlook.
