Castello di Triana

Castello di Triana, Medieval castle in Triana, Italy

Castello di Triana is a stone fortress in southern Tuscany built on a rocky hilltop with rectangular towers and thick defensive walls. It overlooks the Albegna valley and the surrounding countryside from this elevated position.

The fortress arose in the 12th century under the Aldobrandeschi family, who secured their control over this strategically important region. The family maintained it as a seat of power across generations.

The castle holds meaning for locals as a symbol of medieval power in the region and draws visitors interested in understanding feudal life. Walking through it gives a direct sense of how noble families defended and controlled their territories.

Access is via a steep path from Roccalbegna with some sections unpaved, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Guided tours are available during summer months by prior arrangement.

Inside the fortress are preserved arrow slits and guard rooms that show how defenders worked against attackers in medieval times. These details illustrate the everyday reality of castle life.
