Castello di Valdengo, Medieval castle in Valdengo, Italy
Castello di Valdengo is a medieval fortified complex built on a hillside in Valdengo, positioned between two mountain streams with a triangular ground plan. The structure features defensive walls and towers, though its spaces today are integrated into private residences.
The fortress was originally built in medieval times as a military defense structure protecting the local territory. In the 15th century, the Avogadro family converted the defensive compound into a residential settlement, dividing sections among themselves.
The chapel inside holds frescoes from the 14th century created by local artists of the Vercelli school. The artworks show how artistic traditions were valued and maintained within this fortified structure.
The castle remains private property and is not open to public visits, functioning as residential homes for current occupants. Views of the exterior are available from the surrounding area, though entry inside is not permitted.
One of only two bertesche (defensive overhanging structures) remaining in the Biella region can be found here, making it architecturally significant. This particular tower is built as a quadrangular structure placed atop another building, representing a rare medieval defensive technique.
