Castello di Vezio

Castello di Vezio is a medieval castle perched on a hilltop overlooking Lake Como. Its solid stone walls and prominent square tower define the structure, providing views across the water and surrounding mountains from its elevated position.

The castle was built in the late 11th century as a defensive stronghold for Varenna's residents. It played a key role in local conflicts between rival communities around the lake.

The tower displays fossils and information about Lariosaurus, a marine reptile that once inhabited the lake. Visitors get a sense of the prehistoric creatures that swam in these waters long before the castle was built.

Access requires a uphill walk starting from the village of Varenna, which takes some effort to reach the top. Wearing comfortable shoes and allowing extra time for the climb helps visitors enjoy the views without rushing.

The grounds are decorated annually with plaster ghost sculptures that create an eerie and mysterious feeling. These temporary art installations transform how visitors experience the medieval ruins each year.
