Santa Maria Annunziata in Borgo

Santa Maria Annunziata in Borgo is a Baroque church in the Borgo district with a single nave and plastered walls richly furnished with artworks. The building contains paintings and sculptures, many of which come from the former San Michele Arcangelo church.

The church was founded in 1742 and represented a new place of worship in this area. In 1940 it underwent substantial remodeling due to the development of Via della Conciliazione near the Vatican.

The church preserves a fresco depicting the Virgin with the Child, attributed to Renaissance painter Antoniazzo Romano. This work ranks among the most valued artworks inside and draws the attention of visitors interested in early Italian painting.

The building sits in the Borgo district east of the Vatican and is easily accessible on foot from the city center. The church remains open during regular visiting hours, and it is advisable to visit on days outside of services if you want to look around at your own pace.

On the exterior of the building stands a striking statue by French sculptor Louis-Albert Lefeuvre depicting the Archangel Michael battling darkness. This sculpture is a lesser-known artistic addition that defines the space in front of the church.
