Palazzo dei Convertendi

Palazzo dei Convertendi, Renaissance palace in Borgo, Italy

Palazzo dei Convertendi sits on Via della Conciliazione and displays three floors with rusticated portals and a balcony designed by Carlo Fontana. The structure shows the elegant architecture typical of Roman Renaissance buildings in this important area of the city.

The place was closely connected to the life of painter Raphael, who lived there until his death in 1520, and his memory is preserved by a marble plaque on the facade. Later, the building underwent reconstruction between 1936 and 1950 when it was moved from Piazza Scossacavalli to the north side of Via della Conciliazione.

The building originally served as a hospice founded in 1600 by Pope Clement VIII to help Protestants convert to Catholicism. Visitors can sense how this place played an important role in the religious life of Rome during that period.

The building sits directly on the busy Via della Conciliazione, the main street leading to Saint Peter's Basilica, making it easy to reach on foot. The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon when foot traffic on this major street is lighter.

Several frescoes from the original structure were carefully preserved and integrated into the new construction during the twentieth-century rebuilding. These artistic elements create a connection between the old and new forms of the building.
