Santa Maria Maddalena is a baroque church in central Lodi with a single nave that stretches down the middle in an unusual oval shape. The sides contain symmetrically arranged niches and small chapels that frame the main space.
The present building was completed in 1719 after an earlier medieval church was destroyed by fire in 1162. The site itself goes back much further, having once occupied the location of an ancient Roman temple.
The frescoes inside celebrate Saint Mary Magdalene with vivid religious scenes painted in the 1750s. These artworks are central to how people experience the space during their visit.
The church is easy to reach on Via Maddalena and welcomes visitors during regular opening hours. Those who take time to look around can observe the architectural details and artworks at a relaxed pace.
The sacristy has an unusual double-octagon shape with wooden cupboards that date back to the 1700s. These pieces were designed by architect Giovanni Antonio Veneroni and remain in their original condition.
