San Romano, Lucca

San Romano is a Dominican church in the center of Lucca with a single nave covered by barrel vaults. Strong pillars support the structure, while stucco ornaments decorate the interior and the simple exterior gives it a restrained, dignified look.

It was built in the second half of the 13th century when Dominicans reused bricks from a demolished fortress nearby. This material recycling shows how the city transformed as religious building gained importance over military structures.

The name refers to a martyr saint whose veneration shaped this place as a spiritual center. Today visitors notice how the marble monuments inside reflect the devotion of prominent local families across centuries.

It functions today as an auditorium located next to the Ducal Palace in the heart of Lucca. The central position makes it easy to reach on foot while exploring the old town.

Two mechanical organs from different periods stand in the church, with the left one dating from the 17th century and still playable today. This pair of instruments shows how the building has kept its musical function across changing times.
