Forte Stella

Forte Stella is a fortress with a distinctive hexagonal star layout located in Porto Ercole on Monte Argentario. The structure features tall curtain walls, corner bastions, and multiple defensive ditches that define its outer perimeter.

Spanish architects designed this coastal fortification in the early 1600s as part of the strategic Presidi di Toscana defense system. It served to protect the Tuscan coast from maritime attacks during that era.

The fortress now hosts contemporary art exhibitions, especially during summer months. Visitors experience how military architecture and modern cultural programming coexist within these historic walls.

Access to the fortress involves a long northeastern ramp that leads to a round-arched gate, with a bridge crossing to the main complex. The site is generally walkable but requires sure footing on uneven historic surfaces.

The interior contains well-preserved vaulted chambers that offer insight into soldiers' daily routines. These rooms give visitors a sense of what garrison life actually looked like in centuries past.
