Fort Laclos, Military fort in Taranto, Italy.

Fort Laclos stands on San Paolo Island in the Gulf of Taranto, constructed with limestone blocks from the nearby Murge mountains.

Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned the fort's construction in the late 18th century, appointing General Pierre Choderlos de Laclos to oversee the project.

The fort contains remnants of ancient bivalve organisms preserved in its limestone blocks, dating back approximately 100 million years.

Visitors can access the fort through guided tours that provide information about its military architecture and connection to French history.

General Laclos, author of 'Liaisons Dangereuses', was buried in the fort's parade ground, though his remains were later allegedly thrown into the sea.
