Eremo di San Gallo, Mountain hermitage in Soligo, Italy
Eremo di San Gallo is a small hermitage comprising a chapel and living quarters situated on a hilltop at about 363 meters elevation. The simple, compact structure stands on a forested ridge with views over the surrounding landscape.
The hermitage was built in 1430 by Friar Egidio from Lombardy on the foundations of an earlier castle that had served bishops until 1378. This conversion shows how religious communities repurposed fortified sites into places of prayer and solitude.
The chapel displays a fresco showing the Madonna with Child and Saints, including Saint Gallo, reflecting how this place served as a spiritual focus for pilgrims. The religious imagery reveals the devotion that has shaped the site over centuries.
The walk up follows a trail of about 5 kilometers starting from the Pro Loco parking area on Via dei Colli in Farra di Soligo. The path passes through woodland and is most pleasant to walk during warmer months.
During the Christmas season, the southern hillside is illuminated with a large light-decorated installation that can be seen from a distance. This seasonal display gives the remote site a temporary festive quality.
