Fortezza del Cerruglio

Fortezza del Cerruglio is a medieval fortress in Montecarlo with a triangular shape featuring a semi-circular tower and two square towers linked by thick defensive walls built from squared stone blocks. This structure shows how military builders of the time combined different tower shapes to create a strong and flexible defense system.

The fortress was built as a strategic stronghold under Castruccio Castracani, lord of Lucca, and became an important control point in the region during the 1300s. Its construction reflects the military ambitions and power struggles that shaped medieval Tuscany.

This fortress works as both a military museum and palace museum, showing collections that reflect how people in medieval Tuscany built and defended their territory. The displays help visitors understand the daily life and military practices of that era.

The fortress opens during summer months for exhibitions and guided tours, so it is best to check in advance for specific opening times. The site is easily reached on foot, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the uneven walkways and stairs require careful footing.

The site preserves three original gates from different periods: the Florentine Gate and Lucca Gate from the 1300s, plus the Porta Nuova from the 1500s. These different entrances show clearly how the fortress was modified and strengthened over generations to meet changing needs.
