Fortezza del Cerruglio, Medieval fortress in Montecarlo, Italy.
The triangular fortress includes a semi-circular tower and two square towers connected by thick defensive walls made of squared masonry stones.
The fortress served as a strategic command post for Castruccio Castracani, lord of Lucca, during his victory at the Battle of Altopascio in 1325.
The fortress operates as both a military museum and palace museum, displaying collections that reflect the architectural and defensive traditions of medieval Tuscany.
The fortress opens during summer months for exhibitions and guided tours, with an annual visitor count of approximately 5,500 people as of 2019.
The structure retains three original gates from different periods: the 14th-century Florentine Gate, Lucca Gate, and the 16th-century Porta Nuova.
