Piazza Santa Croce fountain, Ornate fountain near Palazzo Cocchi-Serristori in Florence, Italy
The Piazza Santa Croce fountain is an ornate structure with a stone basin and carved decorative details, located at the northern section of this major public square in Florence. It stands in front of the Renaissance-era Palazzo Cocchi-Serristori and serves as a focal point in the plaza's layout.
Giuseppe Manetti designed this structure in the 19th century as a recreation of an earlier Baroque fountain that once occupied the same location. This reconstruction maintains a long tradition of water features in this important square near the basilica.
The fountain serves as a gathering point during the annual Calcio Fiorentino matches, when teams assemble before this traditional Florentine sport begins. It holds a central place in local customs that have shaped the square's role in the city's sporting traditions.
The fountain sits at the northern edge of the plaza and is easy to spot when visiting the area or walking through the square. Visitors can use it as an orientation point for exploring the surrounding piazza on foot.
Water flows continuously from carved stone spouts, producing a gentle sound that blends with the activity of the square. This acoustic element adds subtly to the place's character and is often overlooked by passing visitors.
