Lanzo d’Intelvi funicular, Mountain funicular transport system in Alta Valle Intelvi, Italy.
The Lanzo d'Intelvi funicular is a transport system that once connected the village of Lanzo to Santa Margherita di Valsolda across steep mountain terrain in northern Italy. The two original carriages remain visible at both terminal stations, though the installation no longer operates.
The Santa Margherita funicular company inaugurated this transport system in September 1907, bringing modern mobility to the remote valley region. The system enabled trade and exchange between isolated communities for several decades before eventually ceasing operations.
The funicular served as the vital link connecting isolated villages in the valley, allowing people, goods, and ideas to move freely between communities. Today the abandoned stations tell the story of an era when this technology was essential for mountain life.
Reaching the upper station requires a challenging hike through steep terrain, so wear sturdy footwear and be prepared physically. The lower station is easily accessible from Lanzo, while the upper station can only be reached by water.
The upper station can only be reached by boat from Lake Lugano today, as the mountain path is destroyed and no longer maintained. On the first Sunday of July each year, people gather for an annual celebration at the isolated station, making it a special place of remembrance.
