Gabbro, neighborhood of Rosignano Marittimo
Gabbro is a small village in Rosignano Marittimo in the province of Livorno, situated on a hill about 274 meters above sea level. It consists of stone houses with narrow walkable streets and offers views of surrounding woods and fields from its elevated position.
The first written record of Gabbro dates to the early 1300s, when it was part of territory controlled by Pisa and known as Torricchi-Gabbro. In the 1600s, it came under the rule of various local rulers, including the Medici family from Florence.
The name Gabbro comes from the Latin word 'glabrum', describing the dry, rocky nature of the land. The dark gabbro stones that give the village its name shape its rustic appearance today and reflect how the landscape has always defined life here.
The village lies about 10 kilometers from the sea and is easily reached from nearby cities like Livorno or Collesalvetti via roads through the hills. Parking is available and access is straightforward, making it a convenient day trip.
The painter Silvestro Lega, a leading figure in the Macchiaioli movement, lived here from 1886 and painted the views and streets of the village. His works capture the rustic beauty of Gabbro, allowing visitors to recognize the scenes from his paintings today.
