Turin Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Art museum in Crocetta district, Turin, Italy
The Galleria civica d'arte moderna e contemporanea di Torino occupies a building on via Magenta designed by Carlo Bassi and Goffredo Boschetti, opened in 1959. Its upper volume is clad in flat light grey panels, with angular fins along the roofline; below, a flat canopy on dark posts shelters a black metal fence and gate, and a rough stone wall stands at ground level. The permanent collections of 19th- and 20th-century art number over 47,000 paintings, sculptures, installations and video works, shown on two floors.
Turin was the first Italian city to promote a public modern art collection, begun with the Museo Civico in 1863. From 1895 the works were shown in a pavilion on corso Siccardi, now corso Galileo Ferraris, destroyed by Allied bombing in 1942. Carlo Bassi and Goffredo Boschetti designed the new building on the same site, opened in 1959, with the collection on two floors at director Vittorio Viale's request. Declared unfit in the 1980s, it reopened in July 1993 after long restoration.
The collection spans the 19th and 20th centuries, with works by Giacomo Balla, Filippo de Pisis, Giorgio De Chirico, Paul Klee, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. Since 2016 the participatory programme "Parlare alla GAM" has invited people to present a personal project on Giulio Paolini's open-air work "Anni Luce", known as Arena Paolini.
The gallery stands at Via Magenta 31 in the Crocetta district, reachable from the Re Umberto stop on metro line M1. Group and school visits can be booked in advance. The building holds educational workshops, a conference room, a library, a photo archive, a bookshop and a café.
In 2009, the museum reorganized its display from chronological order to thematic groupings. This shift lets visitors connect artworks through shared ideas rather than just following a timeline.
