Lago Disueri, lake in Sicily
Lago Disueri is an artificial reservoir in Gela created by damming the Disueri River at about 150 meters elevation, covering nearly 2 square kilometers with a depth reaching 34 meters when full. The water surface is typically calm and mirror-like, surrounded by flat countryside with sparse vegetation and no major structures along the shore.
The lake was created by damming the Disueri River to store water resources for the region's agricultural and community needs. Over decades, it evolved from a purely functional water management structure into a space where locals also came to spend leisure time.
The lake serves as a local gathering space where residents walk and observe wildlife in their free time. It remains a modest part of everyday life for the nearby community, reflecting how people connect with the inland landscape of Sicily.
There are no major facilities directly at the lake, so visitors should bring their own water and snacks for a comfortable visit. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions with mild weather and clearer skies, while summer can be quite warm and winter visits tend to be quieter.
The water level fluctuates noticeably with seasonal rainfall patterns, which are typical for this drought-prone region of Sicily. Visiting at different times of year reveals dramatically different landscapes, from a full reflective surface to exposed shorelines.
