Lago di Bilancino, Artificial lake in Barberino di Mugello, Italy

Lago di Bilancino is an artificial lake near Barberino di Mugello in Tuscany that stretches across several square kilometers. The shoreline alternates between small stony beaches and forested sections, with various water sports facilities distributed around its edges.

The water body was created in the late 1990s through dam construction on the Sieve River to improve water management for the region. The project helped reduce flooding risks for the nearby city of Florence.

The northeast section houses the Gabbianello WWF nature preserve, which provides shelter to migratory birds passing through the region including cranes, storks, geese, and flamingos. This part of the lake serves as a crucial stopover point for species traveling between their winter and breeding grounds.

The lake is easily accessible from the Barberino di Mugello highway exit and offers sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, and fishing opportunities throughout the year. The beaches and recreation areas are well-organized and simple to navigate on foot.

The water body serves as a critical reservoir for Florence's water supply, connecting an important city infrastructure project with a popular recreation spot. This dual function makes it an often-overlooked example of how modern water management supports both safety and leisure in the region.

Best natural swimming pools in Italy: wild bathing spots across the country

Italy offers many locations where one can swim in nature. From rock-carved basins to mountain lakes, hot springs, and secluded coves, the country is full of accessible water spots for those who enjoy swimming away from managed beaches. They can be found all over: in the Dolomite valleys, in the heart of Tuscany, on the coasts of Sardinia or Sicily. Some sites are accessible on foot after a short walk, others have been known to locals for a long time. The water can be icy or warm depending on the region, but it is always surrounded by scenic landscapes. These natural pools are often quiet places where people come to relax, have picnics, or simply enjoy the scenery. They reveal another aspect of Italy, one that is more straightforward and closer to nature.
