The monastery was donated to Cluny in 1083 by Teobaldo and Oprando de Tocingo, members of the Lombard aristocracy. This gift marked the start of an important period under the influence of the reformed Benedictine order.

The interior walls display fresco collections spanning the 12th to 16th centuries, including the Historia Salutis cycle in the Santa Maria Maddalena oratory. These artworks show the religious devotion and artistic skill that were cultivated within the monastery over several centuries.
