San Pietro in Palazzuolo, Benedictine monastery ruins in Monteverdi Marittimo, Italy.
San Pietro in Palazzuolo is a Benedictine monastery ruin in Monteverdi Marittimo in Tuscany, with walls that still reveal parts of its original layout. The remains show alternating layers of stone and brick, with portions of the left flank and transept still visible.
The monastery was founded in 754 by Walfredo, a Lombard nobleman, on the foundations of a Roman villa and a temple dedicated to a goddess. The complex served as the seat of an influential Benedictine community before the monks eventually departed.
The site functioned as a spiritual center for surrounding communities and offered shelter to travelers and pilgrims passing through the region. The monks shaped religious life in the area for many centuries.
The site is reached by unpaved paths and sits on elevated ground with views across the surrounding Tuscan landscape. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and allow time to explore the expansive grounds.
Granite columns and marble fragments from the Lombard period were discovered near Badivecchia and are now displayed in the Monteverdi Marittimo museum. These finds reveal the site's connections to both its Roman and medieval past.
