Mausoleo Faccanoni, Eclectic mausoleum in Sarnico, Italy
The Mausoleo Faccanoni is a burial structure in Sarnico's cemetery featuring a pyramid form with grand staircases. A bronze and iron entrance gate leads into a crypt containing 34 burial chambers and a small chapel for ceremonies.
The structure was built in 1907 after a commission from the Faccanoni family and designed by architect Giuseppe Sommaruga. Sommaruga was a leading figure shaping the architectural development of Sarnico during that period.
The structure shows an uncommon approach to burial architecture with few religious symbols, instead emphasizing monumental and secular forms. Visitors notice this departure from traditional church graves immediately upon entering the cemetery.
The mausoleum is located on Via Suardo within Sarnico cemetery and is accessed through the cemetery grounds. Comfortable shoes are recommended due to the numerous steps leading to the entrance.
The entire structure was built from local materials such as Sarizzo from Val Seriana, Ceppo di Brembate, and Sarnico stone for different elements. These regional stones shape its visual character and connect it to the area.
