The Museo Casa Natale di Michelangelo Buonarroti occupies the Palazzo del Podestà, a first-half-15th-century building, together with Palazzo Clusini and the Corte Alta, inside the walls of the Caprese castle. The ground floor of Palazzo Clusini holds the ticket office and bookshop; the upper rooms display Renaissance furniture, a 15th-century Madonna tra santi by Giuliano Amidei, and 19th-century plaster casts of Michelangelo's sculptures.

The first documentary mention of the name Caprese dates to 1011, and the site is called a castrum in a document from 1082; the square tower still visible in the castle is attributed to around 1100. In 1323–1324 the army of Arezzo under Pier Saccone Tarlati besieged the fortress, which capitulated at the end of 1324 and was ordered dismantled by the bishop of Arezzo. In 1384 Caprese submitted to Florence, a podesteria was established, and between the late 14th and early 15th century the walls were enlarged and the Palazzo del Podestà built.

The place is named after Michelangelo, who was born here in 1475, and you can see how sculptors across different periods approached similar subjects. Walking through the rooms, you notice how techniques and artistic choices evolved over centuries.

The museum is open year-round to visitors and is located at Via Capoluogo 1 in Caprese Michelangelo. The site is relatively small and easy to navigate, allowing for a comfortable visit without feeling overwhelmed.

The collection of works and plaster casts shows the evolution of sculpture over many centuries rather than focusing only on the famous birthplace. Visitors often discover that the exhibition is less a simple monument and more a journey through different artistic schools and craft techniques.
