Castello dei Conti Ubertini

Castello dei Conti Ubertini is a medieval castle in Chitignano with one visible crenellated tower and a pointed doorway marking its historic facade. Inside, the structure contains a courtyard, frescoed spaces, and rooms that served both defensive and residential functions.

In 1261 the castle passed to Bishop Guglielmino degli Ubertini as the Counts of Chiusi lost influence in the region. This transfer reflected the shift from lay to ecclesiastical control over the fortress.

The courtyard features frescoed vaults that reflect the family's artistic investments over time. The guard room displays medallions and busts of family members, showing how they wanted to be remembered.

The structure can be easily located by its geographic coordinates and has received recognition from Italian castle research institutions for its preservation work. Its position offers good views of the surrounding Tuscan landscape.

Ten meters below ground lies the 'stanza del trabocchetto', a spiked well chamber used for executing condemned traitors. This hidden trap reveals the harsh realities of medieval justice within the castle's depths.
