Monte San Mauro, Archaeological site in Caltagirone, Italy.

Monte San Mauro extends across a series of small hills containing over 1500 rock-cut tombs carved into the natural limestone formations of Sicily.

The necropolis dates from 2000 BC and features circular burial chambers with pointed arches, containing bronze weapons, gold rings, and ceramic vessels.

Excavations by Paolo Orsi revealed connections between local Siculi people and Mycenaean culture through artifacts discovered in the tombs.

The archaeological findings from Monte San Mauro are displayed at the Archaeological Museum in Syracuse and the Regional Ceramic Museum in Caltagirone.

A Tholos tomb in the lower section was converted into a Christian church around 1500, with remnants of wall paintings still visible today.
