Santa Maria del Monte, Caltagirone

Santa Maria del Monte stands at the top of a long staircase with a western-facing facade and interiors decorated with religious frescoes. The structure creates a visual focal point when approaching the town.

This church dates back to the 12th century and was the first major religious building in Caltagirone before San Giuliano Cathedral was later constructed. It played a central role in the town's early religious life.

The interior walls feature frescoes painted by the Vaccaro brothers in the 1800s depicting Old Testament heroines such as Rebecca and Judith. These paintings shape how the church space feels when you walk through it today.

Access is through the ceramic-decorated staircase from the town center, and the church is regularly open for visitors and worshippers. It helps to take your time climbing the steps and enjoy the walk gradually.

The wooden altar holds a 13th-century Madonna di Conadomini icon showing Madonna with Child on one side and the Risen Christ on the reverse. This double-sided artwork is uncommon and reflects the Byzantine artistic tradition that took root in this region.
