San Michele Arcangelo, Grammichele, Baroque church in Grammichele, Italy
San Michele Arcangelo is a Baroque church in Grammichele featuring three naves, a transept, and a tall dome above the crossing. The interior is decorated with late-Baroque stuccowork and statues of the twelve apostles.
Construction of the church began in 1724 under the patronage of Carlo Maria Carafa Branciforte, Prince of Butera, following the destruction of the old town of Occhiolà in 1693. The completion of the building and its facade details extended over several decades.
The church displays altarpieces depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the Archangel Michael holding a standard of the Virgin Mary.
The church is located on the central Piazza Carlo Maria Carafa next to the Palazzo Communale and is open during regular visiting hours. Its central position makes it easy to access and visitors can view the facade completely from the surrounding square.
Architect Carlo Sada incorporated a clock into the upper portion of the facade during the final construction phase around 1757. This practical addition shows how functionality was blended with artistic design.
